4 Ways for Emerging Leaders to Stand Out

How do you market yourself and stand out when your peers are just qualified as you are?

Here are 4 ways for emerging leaders to develop leadership skills and navigate their way to success.

#1 – Networking
Introducing yourself to someone you don’t know may be nerve wrecking, but you’ve probably heard it a million times, part of your success is in who you know. Instead of viewing networking events like a chore, make the most of your time at these events. There’s a craft to networking and the good news is that craft can be learned.

Often times, your local Chamber of Commerce will offer professional development educational seminars on the do’s and don’ts of networking. Sign up for one, it is worth theinvestment.

Once you’ve become well versed, it’s time to give it a go! There are many networking events throughout Memphis. Check out your local listing for networking events around town and connect with other professionals.

#2 – Join a Board
Being a board member helps you develop leadership skills and build relationships in the community and in your industry. Future marketers and PR practitioners should joinPublic Relations Society of America (PRSA) or American Marketing Association (AMA). These are great resources for networking, professional development and learning new tactics in your industry.

#3 – Find a Mentor
Connecting with an experienced executive will help navigate you to the right path in achieving your goals. Mentors can provide you with the tools and direction to help you go after the things you are most passionate about. However, it is not easy finding a mentor. This is where networking is critical in making a connection with an experienced professional who can guide you on the right path.

#4 – Have Grit
I was at a conference once and a founder of one of the most popular TV productions in the nation was asked, what type of characteristic do you look for in an emerging leader?

Her answer?
“They must have grit.”

Grit is something that cannot be learned in a textbook. It based on your personal outlook and action in life based on experiences and relationships.
