MEMPHIS, TENN., February 1, 2018 – Nathan Alan Yoakum, Memphis-based artist and owner of Nathan Alan Yoakum Art (NAYA), recently designed an acryclic resin purple heart art piece that will be sold at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center’s 26th annual Works of Heart Valentines Auction. The acrylic heart will be available to preview, February 5-9 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and available for auction Saturday, February 10 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Memphis College of Art in Overton Park. The preview week is free and open to the public. Guests can purchase $75 general admission tickets, including complimentary beer, wine, and appetizers, to attend the auction on Saturday, February 10 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

“I look forward to participating in the Works of Heart each year. It’s a great way to support kids and local artists and allows them to speak through their medium,” said Nathan Alan Yoakum, artist and owner of Nathan Alan Yoakum Art (NAYA).  “I chose to create a purple acrylic resin heart for this auction because it’s not only the pantone color of the year, but also because I like the idea of the colors red and blue coming together to make a literal, purple heart.”

While using resins to repair his surfboard, Nathan stumbled upon an idea that would later become a signature medium of his artwork. “I had always dreamed about surfing… that’s where I discovered using resin as a medium. I started using the resin because I was fixing my surfboard. I thought to myself, this is such a great material, “ said Yoakum.

Reaching beyond simply pouring resins, Nathan ventured into the 3D use of resins creating a look all his own. “I started experimenting with the 3D pieces I was making by hand much like a potter would do. I figured out there were certain paints I could add to the resin that would make it not harden as fast and give me enough time to shape it. It had an experimental and scientific approach to it. That’s where I started doing the 3D shapes,” said Yoakum.

About NAYA
NAYA, Nathan Alan Yoakum Art, is a Memphis-based fine artist with an emphasis in abstract expressionism, pop art, and resin sculpture. Vibrancy and rhythm is ingrained in his artistic conscience as he works to generate an experience with his art.

His dimensional developments of resin distills a range of emotion, music and attitude. The application of this medium arose during the reflective task of maintaining his many surfboards and their eventual demise from working waves along the Florida coast. He has developed a technique of forming resin sheets of various dimension and infusing them with a variety of media that brings depth and spirit to his work. He is able to mount, pour, drip and assemble a composition that is meaningful to the artist and his desire to connect the casual observer to the deeper meaning of the piece at hand.
